Tackling school absenteeism during menstruation and taboos in talking about menstrual hygiene management

A study about the two menstrual hygiene management (MHM) behaviours ‘attending school during their periods’ and ‘females being able to talk about menstrual health’ based on the RANAS approach was conducted by IFRC. Results indicated that girls who attend school during their periods (doers) rate it better for their school performance when not attending, rate it more beneficial if they do attend school during their periods, and they find it more important to go to school during their periods. Additionally, the results showed that girls who intend to talk about menstrual hygiene management (MHM) stated that it is beneficial for them to talk about MHM and that they perceive that more than half to of their peers talk about MHM. Based on these results, a buddy system was proposed so that girls are paired up and accountable to each other to support one another to continue school and practice good MHM.
