ENGConsult and Ranas complete qualitative research phase on latrine use in Uíge, Angola

To assure acceptance of new latrines, Ranas has been mandated to develop a behaviour change communication strategy for low-income neighbourhoods of Uíge town, Angola. In collaboration with ENGConsult, the project lead partner, we now completed the first milestone in this Word Bank financed project. 120 qualitative semi-structured interviews revealed that acceptance and safe use of new latrines can be achieved by promoting the following related behaviours:

  1. Latrine cleaning after use by all household members and routine deep cleaning
  2. Making improvements to the newly build latrines and facilitating latrine repairs
  3. Requesting pit emptying through vacuum trucks
  4. Handwashing with soap by all household members

The behaviour change communication strategy will focus on these behaviours. We will now proceed with the next phase of the RANAS approach: RanasMEASURE and quantify these behaviours and the behavioural factors that steer them.
