Niger: Regular cleaning of water containers and handwashing at key times

The Rutsata project, led by Helvetas, aims at supplying water to 30,000 people in the Tahoua region through the construction of 4 multi-village drinking water supplies. Stakeholder consultations and field observations revealed that handwashing rates at key times are low, and irregular or no cleaning of water containers poses a severe health risk in the project region. Over the course of two years, the full RANAS approach has been implemented to promote handwashing with soap and regular cleaning of water containers. For certain phases of the behaviour change project, Helvetas will take the lead, while Ranas provides backstopping. Other project phases are led by Ranas.
