The importance of supporting infrastructure construction with behaviour change

This project, which is realized with the engineering company ENGconsult in Angola, showcases how to make sure that infrastructure improvements are being used correctly and in the long term. New toilets are being installed, and professional service systems surrounding latrine pit emptying will be offered. Using the RANAS methodology, we support and guide this process directly with the beneficiaries and project participants. Safe latrine use will be analyzed and promoted, as well as latrine cleaning (after use and deep-cleaning on a regular basis), pit-emptying (including the openness to contracting future professional services), as well as hand washing, as an important complementary hygiene behaviour. Additionally, the acceptance of planned and implemented measures will be analyzed and integrated into the project activities. After the implementation of community-wide behaviour change communication and promotion, an evaluation will be realized in 2026.
